A hyperlink in Excel usually fails because it is being clicked the wrong way, points to a moved or mistyped destination, or is affected by the workbook’s format or security settings. In Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, first try Ctrl+clicking the cell; if that does not work, inspect the link target and how the link was created.
How hyperlinks work in Excel
A hyperlink is a clickable route from a cell to a destination, such as a website, another place in the workbook, an email address, or a file. The visible text in a cell does not necessarily reveal the destination. A cell that displays “Open report,” for example, might point to a web page, a local file, or a location that no longer exists.
Excel can store links in a cell using the Insert Link command, or create them with the HYPERLINK function. It can also recognize typed web addresses and turn them into links automatically if the relevant AutoFormat option is enabled. These methods can look similar on the worksheet, but the way to diagnose or update them differs: an inserted link has a destination you can edit in the link dialog, while a formula-generated link depends on the formula and its inputs.
It is also useful to distinguish a hyperlink from an external workbook link. A hyperlink opens a destination when selected. An external workbook link is a formula or connection that retrieves data from another workbook. The latter can show update prompts or stale values, but those are not the same issue as a clickable hyperlink failing to open.
Check whether Excel requires Ctrl+click
On Windows, Excel commonly uses Ctrl+click to follow a hyperlink. A regular click may select the cell instead, which can make a working link seem broken. This is especially easy to mistake when the cell is formatted to look like a link but does not have an obvious underline.
To check the setting in Microsoft 365 for Windows, open File > Options > Advanced. Under Editing options, look for Use Ctrl+Click to follow hyperlink. If it is selected, hold Ctrl while clicking the cell. You can clear the option if you prefer links to open with a regular click, but consider that this changes how clicking cells behaves.
- If the cell is being edited, press Enter or Esc to leave edit mode, then try the link again.
- If you are selecting the cell with the keyboard, use the context menu or press Enter to follow the link, depending on the workbook and Excel version.
- On Excel for Mac, the corresponding modifier is generally Command-click; Excel for the web typically follows a link with a regular click. Interface behavior can vary by version and browser.
Do not confuse a click that selects the cell with a failure to open the destination. If Ctrl+click opens the destination, the link itself was functioning.
Inspect the destination for a typo or a moved file
A link can be correctly stored and still fail because the destination has changed. Web addresses may contain a typo, an obsolete page, or an incomplete address. File links can break when a file is renamed, moved to another folder, or stored on a drive that is unavailable to the person opening the workbook.
Right-click the linked cell and choose Edit Hyperlink to inspect its address. In the link dialog, check the destination carefully. For a web link, confirm that it begins with the expected address, such as https://, and that the full path is present. If the address works when copied into a browser but not when clicked in Excel, the problem may be the browser or security environment rather than the address itself.
For a file link, verify that the file still exists at the path shown. A path such as C:\Users\Jordan\Documents\Budget.xlsx refers to a particular Windows user’s computer and folder. It will not necessarily work for a colleague whose username, folder structure, or drive mapping is different. A shared cloud location is often more suitable for a workbook used by multiple people, but access permissions still need to allow each recipient to open the file.
Relative links can also be affected by where the workbook is saved. A link that points to a file beside the workbook may work on one computer and fail after the workbook or target file is moved separately. When sharing, test the workbook from the same location and account the recipient will use.
Check how the hyperlink was created
To create or replace a standard link in Excel for Windows, select a cell and press Ctrl+K, or choose Insert > Link. Enter the destination, add display text if useful, and confirm the link. You can also right-click an existing link and choose Edit Hyperlink. If the cell contains a formula, editing the link through the dialog may not be the right fix; inspect the formula instead.
The HYPERLINK function creates a clickable cell from a destination and optional display text. With no particular cell layout required, enter this in a worksheet cell to link to Microsoft’s website:
=HYPERLINK("https://www.microsoft.com","Microsoft")
If the link address comes from a cell, check both the formula and the address cell. For example, with a complete web address in A2, enter this in B2 to display the text “Open page”:
=HYPERLINK(A2,"Open page")
If A2 is blank, contains an incomplete address, or has unintended spaces, the resulting link may not go where expected. If Excel shows the formula as plain text instead of producing a link, the cell may be formatted as Text or the formula may begin with an apostrophe. Change the cell format to General, then re-enter the formula. Also check that formulas are being calculated rather than displayed: pressing Ctrl+` toggles formula display in many Windows Excel configurations.
When changing a formula, remember that it can be overwritten by later data entry or recalculation. Fix the source cell or formula rather than repeatedly inserting a separate link over it.
Consider security prompts and access permissions
Excel and Windows may warn before opening some external destinations, especially files or locations that could be unsafe. A warning is not necessarily proof that the hyperlink is broken. Read the prompt and confirm that the destination is one you recognize before proceeding. A company’s Microsoft 365 policies may also restrict access to certain websites, network locations, or downloaded files.
A link to a SharePoint or OneDrive file can open a sign-in page, an access-denied message, or a request for permission. That usually means the destination is reachable but the current account lacks access, or the link requires a different account. Ask the file owner to verify sharing permissions and send a link intended for the correct audience.
Do not disable security protections broadly just to make one link work. If the link is to a file you did not expect, or the address looks suspicious, do not open it. For a work or school workbook, ask the Microsoft 365 administrator about policy restrictions rather than changing protected settings on your own.
Account for Excel on the web and other differences
Excel for the web opens links through the browser, so the browser’s pop-up controls, sign-in session, and download behavior can affect what happens. A link to a local file on your computer may not be usable by a web workbook in the same way as a link to an online file. If a link works in the desktop app but not in the browser, check whether the destination is supported from the browser and whether you are signed in to the right account.
On Mac, the menus and keyboard modifiers differ from Windows, and links to Windows-only paths or network drives may not resolve. For instance, a path beginning with a Windows drive letter is not automatically a valid Mac file location. A web URL or shared cloud link is generally more portable, though permissions and account access still apply.
Some destinations are controlled by the default browser or email application, not Excel. If a web link opens the wrong browser, check your operating system’s default browser. If an email link does nothing or opens an unexpected app, check the default mail application and whether the link contains a valid email address.
When a typed address does not become clickable
Excel may not automatically turn text into a hyperlink. In Windows desktop Excel, the relevant setting is under File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type. Look for the option to replace Internet and network paths with hyperlinks. If automatic conversion is off, a typed address can remain plain text; that does not prevent you from adding a link with Ctrl+K.
Automatic formatting can also be inconvenient: Excel may make text clickable when you did not intend it to. You can undo the automatic change immediately or adjust the AutoFormat option. If a cell only looks like a hyperlink because it is blue and underlined, verify it by right-clicking and looking for link commands, or select it and inspect the formula bar. Formatting alone does not create a destination.
A practical troubleshooting order
Use these checks in order, changing one thing at a time. This helps identify the cause instead of masking it with an unrelated setting change.
- Exit cell edit mode, then try Ctrl+click on Windows or the appropriate click action in your version.
- Right-click the cell and choose Edit Hyperlink, if available, to inspect the destination.
- Test the web address in a browser, or confirm that the target file still exists and that you have permission to open it.
- If the cell contains a formula, inspect the formula and any cells supplying the destination. Check for blank values, extra spaces, or incomplete addresses.
- Try the same workbook in the desktop app or Excel for the web to see whether the issue is specific to the app, browser, or local file path.
- If you see a security warning or access message, verify the destination and account instead of disabling protections.
If only one link fails, suspect its address or permissions first. If every link fails, investigate the click behavior, application settings, browser, or organization policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does clicking an Excel hyperlink only select the cell?
Excel for Windows may be set to require Ctrl+click to follow links. Hold Ctrl while clicking, or review File > Options > Advanced for the hyperlink click setting.
Why does my Excel hyperlink say it cannot open the specified file?
The target may have been moved, renamed, deleted, or saved at a path unavailable to your computer. Edit the hyperlink and verify the full path, then check that the file exists and that you can access it.
Why is my HYPERLINK formula showing as text?
The cell may be formatted as Text, the formula may have a leading apostrophe, or Excel may be displaying formulas. Set the cell to General and re-enter the formula; also check formula display and calculation settings.
Why does an Excel link open a sign-in or permission page?
The destination may require an account or sharing permission. Sign in with the intended account or ask the file owner to grant access; the hyperlink itself may be valid.
Why is a web address in Excel not clickable?
Automatic conversion may be disabled, or the text may not be a complete address. Use Ctrl+K to add the link manually, or review the AutoFormat As You Type option for Internet and network paths.
