If the Excel Power Query window opens as a blank white box, first wait briefly, then close and reopen the editor; if it stays blank, restart Excel and check for an Office update. A white window is usually a display, loading, or Office problem—not proof that your query or source data has disappeared.
What a white Power Query window can mean
Power Query is Excel’s tool for connecting to data, cleaning or reshaping it, and loading the result into a worksheet or data model. In Microsoft 365 for Windows, its editor is a separate window inside Excel. When that window is completely white, the editor’s interface may not have rendered correctly, or it may still be opening. It is different from a query error, which normally shows an error message or a problem at a particular step.
First identify what is actually blank. If the ribbon, query list, and preview are all missing, suspect a window or rendering issue. If the editor controls are visible but the preview area is empty, the query may have no selected step, may return zero rows, or may not yet have loaded a preview. If only Excel’s worksheet is white, the issue may have nothing to do with Power Query.
A blank preview is not automatically a sign of lost data. Power Query transformations are stored as query steps; the editor preview is not the source file itself. Avoid deleting queries or recreating connections until you have determined whether the problem is only visual.
Open the editor again and check whether it is still loading
If Excel has just opened a large workbook or a query connected to a slow network location, give it a short time to respond. A preview can take longer when the source is large, remote, or requires authentication. Do not repeatedly click Refresh while the window is unresponsive; repeated actions can make it harder to tell whether the first request is still running.
- Wait briefly and check whether Excel displays a progress indicator, a credentials prompt, or a dialog hidden behind another window.
- Press Esc once if a menu or dialog may be open. If Excel responds, close the editor normally and reopen it.
- For an existing query, open Data > Queries & Connections, then double-click the query. You can also right-click it and choose Edit.
- To test the editor without depending on the original source, use Data > Get Data > From Other Sources > Blank Query. The exact placement of commands can vary slightly with ribbon layout and updates.
If the editor opens for a blank query but not for one particular connection, the source, a query step, or its credentials may be involved. If every attempt gives the same white window, focus on Excel, display settings, and Office repair rather than rebuilding a single query.
Rule out a window-position or display problem
Sometimes the editor is open but positioned partly outside the visible desktop, especially after disconnecting a second monitor or changing display scaling. The result can look like a blank or unusable window. Check the taskbar and use Alt+Tab to see whether Power Query is open behind Excel or another dialog.
On Windows, select the Power Query window with Alt+Tab. If it appears active but cannot be seen properly, press Alt+Space, then M, use an arrow key, and move the mouse to bring the window back onto the screen. Press Enter to set its position. This is a Windows window-management shortcut, not a Power Query command.
Also try reconnecting the monitor arrangement you used when the problem began, or temporarily use one display at a standard resolution and scaling. If the white box appears only on one monitor, or changes when you move Excel between screens, that points toward display rendering or window placement. These checks do not change query contents.
Update Excel and test for add-in conflicts
Close and reopen Excel before making deeper changes. Then check for Office updates: select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. The available labels can vary if Microsoft 365 is managed by an organization; in that case, an administrator may control updates. An update can correct an application bug, although it is not a guaranteed fix for every blank window.
You can also test whether an add-in is interfering. Close Excel, press Windows key+R, enter excel /safe, and start Excel in Safe Mode. Open the same workbook and try the editor. Safe Mode changes how Excel loads add-ins and some custom settings, so treat it as a comparison test rather than a permanent way to work. If the editor works there, disable add-ins one at a time in normal Excel using File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins next to Manage, select Go, and test again after changing one item.
Do not disable workplace security software or install unofficial fixes just to test this. If the workbook contains confidential data, follow your organization’s IT guidance before moving it to another computer or sending it to support.
Check graphics settings and repair Microsoft 365
If the whole editor remains white across workbooks, graphics rendering or damaged Office components are reasonable next suspects. In Excel, open File > Options > Advanced and look under the Display section. Some Office installations provide a Disable hardware graphics acceleration option. If you see it, try changing that setting, restart Excel, and check the editor again. The option is not present in every current build, so do not look for a registry edit as a substitute.
If changing the available display setting does not help, try an Office repair. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365, choose its three-dot menu, and select Modify. Choose Quick Repair first and follow the prompts. If the problem persists, Online Repair is a more extensive option and may require an internet connection and sign-in afterward. Save work and close Office apps before either repair. Menu names can differ slightly across Windows releases.
After repair, reopen Excel and test with a new blank workbook as well as the affected workbook. If only one workbook triggers the white box, preserve a copy before investigating workbook-specific problems. If several workbooks fail, or the issue began after a managed Office update, your IT administrator or Microsoft support may be able to check the installation and build details.
When the white area is a normal preview or query result
Not every white region in Power Query is a broken editor. The preview shows the output of the currently selected query step. A blank preview may be expected if a filter removes all rows, a source returns an empty table, or a step creates a structure without data. Select earlier steps in the Applied Steps list to see where the rows disappear. The preview is an inspection aid, not a guarantee that every source row is displayed at once.
For example, suppose a table has 500 rows before a filter and zero afterward. The editor may look empty in the preview, but the query is functioning according to that filter. Check the formula bar or Applied Steps and review filters, removed rows, and source selection before changing anything. If the editor shows a yellow or red error banner, read the message; a credential, permission, privacy, or source-path problem is more likely than a blank-window rendering failure.
Power Query can also show an empty preview while it evaluates a slow connection. A database, SharePoint location, or network file may take longer than a small local workbook. If Excel eventually displays a sign-in prompt or a source error, address that prompt instead of repeatedly refreshing. Confirm that the source is reachable and that the account has access before changing query steps.
Protect queries and data while troubleshooting
Most of the checks above—restarting Excel, moving a window, updating Office, or testing with a blank query—do not erase the source data. Still, save a copy of an important workbook before making changes to queries, credentials, or loading destinations. A query can be set to load to a worksheet, the Data Model, or connection only, so an empty sheet does not necessarily mean its definition is gone.
Use these precautions while diagnosing the issue:
- Do not delete and recreate a query just because its preview is white. First inspect whether the query remains listed under Data > Queries & Connections.
- Do not clear credentials or privacy settings unless you understand which sources will need to be authenticated again.
- Keep an untouched backup before editing filters, source paths, or Applied Steps.
- If the workbook belongs to an organization, ask IT before changing managed add-ins or installing software.
Clearing a preview cache may help in some cases, but it is not the first thing to try. If the editor is usable, check File > Options and settings > Query Options for a Data Load or cache option; its availability and wording can depend on the Excel build. Clearing cached preview data is not the same as deleting the query, but Excel may need to retrieve the preview again from the source.
Excel for Mac and Excel for the web
These steps are written for Microsoft 365 Excel on Windows. Excel for Mac has different menus and feature availability, and Power Query authoring and refresh support can differ by update and source type. If you are on a Mac, install available Office updates and use the Mac version’s own Excel settings rather than following Windows paths such as File > Options or Windows Safe Mode. A shortcut such as Alt+Space is also Windows-specific.
Excel for the web runs in a browser and does not use the same desktop editor window. Its Power Query features and supported actions can vary, so a white browser area should also be checked for browser loading, extensions, or a temporary service issue. If the same workbook works in desktop Excel but not in the browser, compare the available features and report the browser and workbook behavior to your administrator or support channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Power Query open to a completely white screen?
Common possibilities include a stalled editor, a display-rendering issue, an off-screen window, an Office problem, or an add-in conflict. Test a blank query and another workbook, then restart and update Excel. If only one query is affected, investigate its source and steps.
Will a white Power Query window delete my queries?
No. A white window by itself does not delete query definitions or source files. Check Data > Queries & Connections after reopening Excel. Save a backup before editing or removing queries, and distinguish a missing preview from a missing query in the list.
Why is the Power Query preview blank but the ribbon still visible?
The selected step may return no rows, the query may be waiting on a slow source, or a previous filter may have removed the data. Select earlier Applied Steps and check for an error message or sign-in prompt. A blank preview does not always mean the editor has failed.
Can I fix the white box by reinstalling Excel?
Usually, try restarting, updating, checking the display, and running Office Quick Repair first. Online Repair is a stronger option if the problem continues. A complete reinstall is rarely the first troubleshooting step and may require help from your organization if Microsoft 365 is managed.
Does this fix apply to Excel for Mac?
Not exactly. The article’s menu paths and Safe Mode test are for Excel on Windows. Mac has different settings and Power Query capabilities can vary by update, so update Office for Mac and follow Mac-specific support steps for your version.
When to get further help
Contact your organization’s IT team or Microsoft support if the editor is still white after an update and repair, if it fails in multiple workbooks, or if the problem began after a controlled Office change. Note your Excel version from File > Account, the Windows version, whether Safe Mode changes the result, and whether a blank query opens. Those details help distinguish a general rendering fault from a workbook, source, or account issue without risking the original data.
