To display Excel dates as day, month, year, select the date cells, press Ctrl+1, choose Custom, and enter dd/mm/yyyy for a numeric date such as 07/03/2026. For a more readable month name, use d mmmm yyyy, which displays the same date as 7 March 2026. These formats change how a real date looks, not the date value stored in the cell.
What day-month-year format means in Excel
Day-month-year puts the day first, the month second, and the year last. It is a familiar order in many countries, but it can be confused with month-day-year dates when numbers are separated by slashes. For example, 04/05/2026 could mean 4 May or April 5, depending on the convention. A four-digit year and a clear display format reduce that ambiguity.
Excel typically stores a recognized date as a number, often called a serial value, and displays it according to the cell’s number format. The underlying value can still be used in date calculations, sorting, and charts. Changing the display to day-month-year does not, by itself, swap the day and month or rewrite the stored date.
This distinction matters when a workbook contains data from different regions. A cell that displays 07/03/2026 may represent 7 March or July 3 depending on how the original entry was interpreted. Formatting can make the display clearer, but it cannot correct a date that was parsed incorrectly when it was entered or imported.
Choose a day-month-year style
There is no single best format for every workbook. Use a numeric format when compactness matters and a month name when readers could mistake the order. Consider how the date will be printed, exported, or shared with people using different regional settings.
dd/mm/yyyydisplays 07/03/2026. It keeps both day and month at two digits and uses a four-digit year.d/m/yyyydisplays 7/3/2026. It is shorter, but the single-digit day and month can make a column less visually uniform.d mmm yyyydisplays 7 Mar 2026. It is compact while spelling out the month in an abbreviated form.d mmmm yyyydisplays 7 March 2026. It is especially clear in reports and correspondence, although it takes more column width.dddd, d mmmm yyyydisplays Saturday, 7 March 2026. It adds the weekday, which can help with schedules but may be unnecessarily long in a data table.
Use four digits for the year in most shared files. Two-digit years save space, but they are less explicit and can be interpreted according to Excel’s date-entry rules rather than the reader’s expectations. A label such as 7 Mar 26 is understandable in many contexts; 07/03/26 is much easier to misread.
How Excel date format codes work
In a custom number format, d represents the day, m the month, and y the year. Repeating a code changes how much detail Excel displays. One d shows a day without a leading zero, while dd pads single-digit days with a zero. Similarly, m shows a month number without padding and mm adds a leading zero.
mmmshows an abbreviated month name, such as Mar.mmmmshows the full month name, such as March.mmmmmshows the first letter of the month name in common English-language formats.yyshows a two-digit year, whileyyyyshows a four-digit year.
Separators in the format can be slashes, hyphens, spaces, or commas. For example, dd-mm-yyyy displays 07-03-2026, while d mmmm, yyyy displays 7 March, 2026. The characters determine the displayed pattern; regional settings may affect how Excel presents or interprets some separators and names.
The letter m can also represent minutes in time formats. Excel interprets it as a month in a date context and as minutes in a time context, with the surrounding format helping determine the meaning. For a plain date, dd/mm/yyyy is understood as day, month, year. If you are creating a combined date-and-time format, check the result carefully so a month code is not mistaken for a minute code.
Apply the format in Excel for Windows
In Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, apply a built-in date format or define a custom one. These steps change the selected cells’ number format and do not convert text into dates.
- Select the cells or column containing the dates. To format an entire column, click its letter at the top of the worksheet.
- Press Ctrl+1 to open the Format Cells dialog. You can also right-click the selection and choose Format Cells.
- Open the Number tab and select Date to see available date styles, or select Custom to enter a specific pattern.
- For Custom, type a format such as
dd/mm/yyyyord mmmm yyyyin the Type box. - Check the Sample preview, then select OK. Widen the column if the displayed date appears as hash marks.
The Home tab’s Number Format menu also offers common date choices. A built-in Short Date option may follow your computer’s regional convention, so it may not put the day first. If the preview is not in the order you want, use Custom and specify the code explicitly. The Format Cells dialog is available in Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows.
Regional settings and date interpretation
Excel’s regional settings influence how dates are recognized when typed or imported, as well as the default appearance of some built-in date formats. A user whose usual order is month-day-year may enter 04/05/2026 and have Excel interpret it as April 5. Applying a day-month-year display afterward could then show 05/04/2026: the display has changed, but the underlying date remains April 5.
For dates that could be ambiguous, use a month name when entering them, such as 4 May 2026, or use a consistent import method that specifies the source’s date order. A format like yyyy-mm-dd is also useful for unambiguous year-month-day displays, though it is not a day-month-year format. When data comes from a text file, inspect the import preview and set the date locale or order to match the source data where the import options allow it.
Custom format codes are interpreted by Excel, but displayed names and conventions can depend on the language and regional configuration. A format using mmmm may show a localized month name. Therefore, a workbook opened on another computer might display month names in that computer’s language. For machine-to-machine data exchange, use a documented convention and validate the exported result rather than assuming that a visual format alone controls how every application reads the date.
Common problems and what they mean
If applying a date format does nothing, the cells may contain text rather than Excel date values. Formatting changes how numeric date values appear; it does not automatically convert text such as an imported string into a usable date. Text often stays left-aligned by default, though alignment can be changed manually, so alignment is only a clue, not proof.
- The date stays unchanged: Check whether the cell contains text. If it came from a text file, use the import process or Excel’s Text to Columns feature to convert it, choosing the correct date order where prompted.
- The cell shows hash marks: The column is too narrow for the chosen display. Widen the column or choose a shorter format; the hash marks usually do not mean the date value is lost.
- The day and month seem reversed: The stored date may have been interpreted using a different regional order. Verify the actual date value before changing the display format.
- The year is missing or abbreviated: Choose a format containing
yyyyfor a four-digit year, oryyfor two digits. - A number appears instead of a date: The cell may be formatted as General or Number. Apply a date format to a valid date serial value to display it as a calendar date.
Do not try to fix an incorrectly interpreted date by simply changing its format. First determine what the source meant and what date value Excel stored. If imported values are text, convert them using the intended source order; if they are already valid but represent the wrong day, correct the values themselves. This prevents a polished-looking display from concealing inaccurate data.
Formatting dates versus converting them to text
A number format preserves the date as a date value, so Excel can sort dates chronologically, calculate elapsed days, and use the values in date-based functions. The displayed form is just a presentation choice. This is generally the right approach for worksheets that people will continue to filter, analyze, or update.
Converting dates to text is different. Text can be useful when creating a fixed label for a report or exporting to a system that expects a specific string, but text values do not behave like date serial values in normal date calculations. A column containing a mixture of text dates and real dates may sort unexpectedly or be difficult to use in formulas. If you need text for a particular export, preserve a separate column of real dates when ongoing analysis matters.
Copying a formatted date into another application may also produce a different result from what appears in Excel. Some paste operations transfer the underlying date value, while others transfer displayed text; file formats can also handle dates differently. For a dependable handoff, check the receiving application’s requirements and test a small sample before exporting a large dataset.
Excel for Mac and Excel for the web
The day-month-year format codes work in Excel for Mac as well as Windows, although the position of commands and available options can vary by version. On Mac, select the cells and open the Format Cells controls from the Home tab or the Format menu, then choose a date category or custom number format. If a Windows shortcut does not work on your Mac keyboard, use the menus rather than assuming the key combination is identical.
Excel for the web supports applying number formats, but its interface and custom-format options can differ from the desktop application. If you cannot find the exact custom pattern in the web interface, open the workbook in the desktop version of Excel and set the format there. The saved number format remains associated with the workbook, though the displayed month names and regional conventions can still vary across devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change Excel to day-month-year? Select the date cells, press Ctrl+1, choose Custom, enter dd/mm/yyyy, and select OK. This works when the cells contain real Excel dates.
What is the format code for day, month, and year? Use dd/mm/yyyy for a two-digit day and month with a four-digit year. Use d mmmm yyyy to show the day and full month name, as in 7 March 2026.
Why does Excel keep showing month-day-year? The selected built-in date format may follow your regional settings. Choose Custom and enter the exact order you need. If Excel has already interpreted the original entry incorrectly, changing the display format alone will not repair its date value.
Can I change the date format without changing the date? Yes. Applying a number format changes the display while retaining the underlying date value. The exception is when the cell is text or the date was originally interpreted as the wrong day and month; formatting does not convert or correct those cases.
Why does my date show as #####? The column is usually too narrow to show the formatted date. Widen it or use a shorter format such as d/m/yy. Check the underlying value if widening the column does not resolve the display.
Will day-month-year formatting work when I share the workbook? A custom numeric format is saved with the workbook and generally travels with it. However, month names may be localized, and other programs may display dates differently. Use an explicit, agreed date convention and verify how the recipient’s software handles the file.
