If Power Pivot is not working in Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, first enable its COM add-in: go to File > Options > Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins in the Manage box, select Go, check Microsoft Power Pivot for Excel, and click OK. If the add-in is missing from the list, confirm that your Excel edition and platform support Power Pivot before trying repairs.
What Power Pivot does—and what it does not do
Power Pivot is Excel’s tool for building and working with a Data Model: a collection of tables, relationships, and calculations that can support PivotTables and other analysis. It is useful when data comes from multiple sources or when a normal worksheet PivotTable is not enough. For example, a model can connect a sales table to a product table by product ID, then let a PivotTable summarize sales by product category without first combining the tables into one large worksheet.
Power Pivot is not the same thing as a regular PivotTable, nor is it identical to Power Query. Power Query imports and reshapes data; Power Pivot manages the model and calculations; a PivotTable presents a summary. These features can work together, but a problem in one does not necessarily mean the others are broken. A normal PivotTable can work even when the Power Pivot tab is unavailable, and Power Query can load data without you opening the Power Pivot window.
That distinction helps narrow the issue. If the tab is missing, investigate add-in availability and ribbon settings. If the tab appears but Manage does nothing, investigate Excel’s add-in state or installation. If a PivotTable is blank, incomplete, or out of date, check the model, source data, and refresh settings instead of repeatedly enabling the add-in.
Check your Excel version, license, and platform
Power Pivot is a Windows desktop Excel feature, and availability depends on the Excel edition and license provided to you. Microsoft 365 is a subscription family, not a guarantee that every account or managed installation exposes every feature. Work or school administrators can also control which apps and components are installed. Check File > Account to see the product information and account associated with Excel, then ask your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator whether your license includes the desktop Power Pivot feature.
Power Pivot for Excel is not available as an add-in in Excel for Mac or Excel for the web. If you are using either, switching on a Windows COM add-in is not an option. A workbook containing a Data Model may still be usable in some ways in other Excel environments, but you should not expect to create or manage the model there as you would in Windows desktop Excel. Open the workbook in a supported Windows desktop installation for model-building tasks.
Also check whether you are using desktop Excel rather than a browser tab or a simplified mobile app. In a managed workplace, compare your installation with a colleague’s only if they use the same relevant Excel edition and platform. If your edition does not include Power Pivot, reinstalling Excel or changing ribbon settings will not add the feature; the appropriate fix is an eligible license or a supported version.
Enable the Power Pivot COM add-in
In Windows desktop Excel, follow this sequence:
- Open Excel and choose File > Options.
- Select Add-ins in the Excel Options window.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Check Microsoft Power Pivot for Excel, click OK, and look for the Power Pivot tab on the ribbon.
If the add-in was already checked, clear the checkbox, click OK, return to the same dialog, check it again, and click OK. Close and reopen Excel if the tab still does not appear. This resets the add-in’s loaded state; it does not delete the Data Model in your workbook. If you work with important files, save them before changing add-in settings.
Do not confuse the COM Add-ins list with the Excel Add-ins list. The Manage box can display different add-in types, and Power Pivot is enabled through COM Add-ins. Selecting Excel Add-ins instead can make it seem as if Power Pivot is absent when you are simply looking in the wrong list.
If the Power Pivot tab is missing or disabled
If Microsoft Power Pivot for Excel is not listed under COM Add-ins, check the product and license first. If your edition should include it, close Excel and install available Microsoft 365 updates, then check again. An installation that is incomplete or damaged may need repair. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365, choose its change or modify option, and run Quick Repair. If that does not help, Online Repair is a more thorough repair and may require a stable internet connection and sign-in afterward. The exact controls can vary by how an organization installed Office.
If Excel disabled the add-in after a crash or stability problem, inspect the disabled-items list. Go to File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage to Disabled Items, and click Go. If Power Pivot appears there, select it and re-enable it. Then return to COM Add-ins and make sure its checkbox is selected. Repeated crashes after re-enabling it are a reason to update or repair Office and to check with your administrator, not to keep forcing the add-in on indefinitely.
The tab might also be hidden by ribbon customization. Right-click the ribbon, choose Customize the Ribbon, and check whether the Power Pivot tab is selected in the list of main tabs. If the tab is selected but still absent, focus on add-in loading, license, or installation rather than changing more ribbon options. In a work-managed installation, organizational policies may prevent users from enabling some components.
Power Pivot opens, but the model or PivotTable is wrong
A visible Power Pivot tab does not mean every table has been added to the Data Model. A worksheet table can exist only on the sheet until you explicitly add it. To create a PivotTable from model data, use Insert > PivotTable and select the option to use this workbook’s Data Model when it is offered. For data brought in through Power Query, open the load options and select Add this data to the Data Model if the model is where you want the query output to go.
Before troubleshooting relationships, verify that the expected tables and rows are actually present in the model. Open Power Pivot > Manage and inspect the tables. If a table is missing or has old values, return to the query or source connection and refresh it. If rows are present but a category or total does not behave as expected, check the relationship fields: the values must represent the same kind of identifier, and the lookup side of a conventional one-to-many relationship should contain unique keys. For example, a product table with duplicate product IDs can make a relationship ambiguous.
Another common source of confusion is expecting a worksheet formula to act as a model calculation. Power Pivot calculations are created in the model, often as measures, and are then used in model-based PivotTables. Measures summarize in the context of the PivotTable, while calculated columns store a value for each row. If a total looks unexpected, check which kind of calculation you need, the fields used in the PivotTable, and any filters applied. Changing the source table alone may not update a model until it is refreshed.
Refresh failures and data connection problems
When Power Pivot works but data is stale, use Data > Refresh All and read any error message carefully. A refresh can fail because a file was moved, a server is unreachable, credentials expired, a source column was renamed, or the user no longer has permission. A message about authentication is different from a missing-column error; the first points toward sign-in or access, while the second usually means the query or model expects a field that the source no longer supplies.
Check the connection or query that feeds the table rather than assuming the model itself is damaged. Confirm the source path, account permissions, and the source’s current column names and data types. For a workbook that refreshes on one computer but not another, compare access to network locations, database drivers, and credentials. A colleague’s working copy may use a different local path or saved sign-in, so copying settings blindly can create another failure.
For a large model, refresh can take time and use substantial memory. Close unnecessary workbooks and applications, make sure the source is reachable, and allow the refresh to finish before starting another. If Excel becomes unresponsive repeatedly, note which table or query is being refreshed and whether the issue occurs with a smaller sample. An administrator may need to investigate source limits, drivers, or the deployment of Office.
When to repair, update, or ask an administrator
Try fixes in an order that preserves evidence and minimizes disruption: confirm Windows desktop Excel and license eligibility, enable the COM add-in, check Disabled Items and ribbon customization, update Office, and then repair the installation if the problem remains. Record the exact error text and when it occurs. A precise message is more useful to IT support than saying only that Power Pivot is broken.
Before repairing Office or changing a model, save a separate copy of the workbook, especially if it contains complex queries, relationships, or measures. Office repair normally targets the installation rather than workbook contents, but keeping a backup is sensible. If the problem is limited to one workbook, test whether the add-in opens in a new blank workbook and whether another known-good model opens. That comparison can distinguish a workbook-specific issue from a general installation or account problem.
Contact your administrator when the add-in is missing from an eligible managed installation, repair options are restricted, sign-in or data-source permissions fail, or the issue recurs after repair. Include the Excel product information, Windows version, whether Power Pivot is listed under COM Add-ins, the relevant error message, and whether the issue affects one workbook or all workbooks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Power Pivot not showing in Excel?
In Windows desktop Excel, it is commonly unchecked under File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Go. It can also be disabled, hidden on the ribbon, unavailable under your license, or absent because you are using Mac or web Excel.
How do I add Power Pivot to Excel?
On a supported Windows desktop installation, enable Microsoft Power Pivot for Excel in the COM Add-ins dialog. If it is not listed, confirm that your edition and account include the feature and that Office is properly installed. Avoid downloading add-in files from unofficial sites.
Why is Power Pivot grayed out?
First check whether the COM add-in is enabled and whether Excel has disabled it after a problem. Also confirm you are in Windows desktop Excel and signed into the expected account. If the feature is restricted by your organization or not included with your edition, ribbon changes cannot make it available.
Can I use Power Pivot in Excel for Mac or Excel Online?
The Power Pivot COM add-in for building and managing a Data Model is a Windows desktop feature, not an add-in available in Mac or web Excel. Use a supported Windows desktop Excel installation for those model-management tasks.
Why does Power Pivot not refresh my data?
Check the refresh error, source location, credentials, permissions, and whether the source columns or data types changed. If the table is loaded through Power Query, inspect the query as well as the model. A successful refresh of one source does not guarantee that every connection in Refresh All succeeded.
