Zoho Sheet does not run Excel VBA macros, so there is no VBA command you can paste into Zoho Sheet to delete a row. In Zoho Sheet, right-click the row number at the left of the grid and choose Delete Row; if you meant Excel, the VBA example below deletes the worksheet row containing the active cell.
Why Zoho Sheet and VBA Do Not Match
VBA, or Visual Basic for Applications, is the macro language used by desktop Microsoft Office applications such as Excel. A VBA procedure runs inside Excel’s VBA environment, where it can refer to objects such as a workbook, worksheet, cell, or row. Zoho Sheet is a separate spreadsheet application in a browser, not an Excel installation with the VBA editor available.
That distinction matters when a search for “Zoho Sheet VBA” brings up an Excel macro. The code may be valid VBA, but Zoho Sheet cannot execute it as VBA. Uploading an Excel workbook to a cloud spreadsheet does not turn the browser application into Excel or make Excel’s macro runtime available. Zoho may offer its own automation features, depending on the product and account, but those are separate from VBA and require their own supported workflow.
If you are working in Zoho Sheet, use the built-in row operation below. If you are actually working in Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, use the VBA example later in this article. Checking which application is open is the first step toward avoiding a macro that cannot run.
Delete a Row Directly in Zoho Sheet
To remove one complete row in Zoho Sheet, select the row header rather than just the cells you want to clear. The row headers are the numbered boxes along the left edge of the sheet.
- Find the number of the row you want to remove.
- Right-click that row number. Selecting the header highlights the whole worksheet row.
- Choose Delete Row from the context menu.
- Check the rows above and below the deletion to confirm that the intended data was removed and the remaining rows shifted up.
Deleting a row is different from clearing its contents. Pressing a Delete or Backspace key may clear cell values without removing the row structure; the exact effect can depend on the application and selection. The row-header context menu makes the intent explicit. If you only need to erase values while keeping formulas, formatting, or the row’s position, use a clear-contents action instead of deleting the row.
Also check whether the sheet is protected or whether you have permission to edit it. A protected worksheet or view-only access can prevent deletion. If the command is unavailable, ask the owner for editing access or have the owner adjust the protection settings.
Excel VBA to Delete the Active Cell’s Row
If the task is actually in desktop Excel, the following macro deletes the entire worksheet row containing the active cell. It asks for confirmation and identifies the sheet and row before making the change. Put it in a standard VBA module in Excel, not in Zoho Sheet.
Sub DeleteActiveWorksheetRow()
Dim ws As Worksheet
Dim rowNumber As Long
Dim answer As VbMsgBoxResult
' Use the worksheet containing the current active cell.
Set ws = ActiveSheet
rowNumber = ActiveCell.Row
' Confirm the exact sheet and row before deleting.
answer = MsgBox("Delete row " & rowNumber & " on " & ws.Name & "?", _
vbYesNo + vbQuestion, "Confirm row deletion")
If answer = vbYes Then
ws.Rows(rowNumber).Delete
End If
End Sub
The macro uses ActiveCell.Row, so it deletes the row containing the active cell even if you selected a cell rather than clicking the row header. If you select several rows, it deletes only the row containing the active cell. That behavior is intentional: it avoids treating a broad selection as permission to delete multiple rows. To delete multiple rows, select and verify them separately or adapt the procedure deliberately.
Deleting a worksheet row shifts the rows below it upward and affects the whole sheet, not just the cells currently visible in a table. Formulas that refer to the deleted cells may adjust, and the deletion can change the layout of related data. Review the selected row before confirming.
Put the Macro in Excel and Run It
In Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, open the workbook, choose Developer > Visual Basic, and in the Visual Basic Editor choose Insert > Module. Paste the procedure into the module, then return to Excel. If the Developer tab is hidden, turn it on through File > Options > Customize Ribbon by checking Developer. You can run the procedure from Excel’s Developer > Macros command.
Save the workbook as an Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (.xlsm) if you need to keep the VBA code in that file. The macro runs in the Excel desktop application; it is not a browser-side Zoho Sheet feature. Excel for Mac also supports VBA, but its menus and keyboard shortcuts can differ from Windows. Use the Visual Basic Editor and macro commands available in your Mac version of Excel, and avoid assuming a Windows-only path or shortcut will be identical. This sample uses ordinary worksheet operations rather than Windows-specific APIs.
Before running any macro, save a copy of the workbook. Excel macros cannot be undone with Ctrl+Z, so the usual Undo command is not a dependable recovery method after a VBA deletion. On Mac, the usual Undo shortcut is Command+Z, but it likewise does not reverse a macro’s changes. A backup is safer than relying on Undo.
What “Selected Row” Means in the Macro
Spreadsheet users can mean two different things by “selected row.” They may have clicked one cell in a row, or they may have selected the entire row by clicking its row number. The sample macro supports both for a single target row: it looks at the active cell and deletes that cell’s whole worksheet row. If the active cell is in row 12, the procedure deletes worksheet row 12.
The code does not inspect which cells contain data, and it does not delete only a table record or a filtered record. It removes the worksheet row itself. That distinction is important when data sits beside the apparent table, or when a sheet contains multiple independent blocks. If you only want to remove a record from an Excel table, use the table’s row-deletion controls or write code specifically for that table rather than deleting the entire worksheet row.
Filters can make a row’s position less obvious. A filtered view may hide some rows, but worksheet row numbers still identify the underlying sheet rows. Confirm the row number and its contents before allowing the macro to run. The confirmation prompt is a safeguard, not a substitute for checking the data.
Common Problems and Safer Checks
- The macro does not appear in Zoho Sheet: That is expected for VBA. Switch to Excel desktop to run VBA, or delete the row with Zoho Sheet’s own row controls.
- The wrong row is removed: The macro acts on the active cell, which may not be the cell you think is active. Click a cell in the intended row, verify the prompt’s row number and sheet name, and cancel if either is wrong.
- Only cell contents disappear: You may have used a clear command rather than deleting the row. Select the row header and use the row deletion command.
- The macro cannot be saved with the workbook: Confirm that you are saving as
.xlsm, not as a macro-free workbook format. Keep a separate original copy. - Deletion is blocked: Check whether the sheet is protected, the workbook is read-only, or your account lacks edit permission.
After a deletion, check totals, formulas, named ranges, charts, and any linked summaries that depend on the affected data. Excel often updates references when rows are deleted, but a workbook can include formulas or external connections whose results merit a manual check. In Zoho Sheet, review the resulting layout and any formulas that use the deleted row as well.
Choosing the Right Method
Use Zoho Sheet’s context menu when you are editing a Zoho Sheet document in a browser. It is the shortest, application-native method and avoids trying to run code the product does not execute. It also makes the row being removed visible before the action.
Use VBA when the workbook is open in Excel desktop and you need a repeatable operation, perhaps as part of a larger Excel macro. For a one-time deletion in Excel, selecting the row header and using the row deletion command may be simpler than creating a macro. A macro is most useful when the same controlled action must be repeated; it is not automatically safer merely because it is code.
If your workflow moves between Excel and Zoho Sheet, keep a clean source copy and verify the file after moving it. Do not assume that an Excel VBA project will run inside Zoho Sheet or survive every import/export path unchanged. Test with a duplicate file and confirm where the authoritative version of the data lives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Zoho Sheet run Excel VBA macros?
No. Zoho Sheet does not execute VBA as Excel does. Use Zoho Sheet’s own editing or automation capabilities, or open the workbook in desktop Excel to run VBA.
How do I delete a row in Zoho Sheet without VBA?
Right-click the row number on the left side of the grid and choose Delete Row. Select the row header first if you want to make sure the whole row is targeted.
Does the Excel macro delete only the selected cells?
No. The example deletes the entire worksheet row containing the active cell, including cells outside a visible data table. It does not merely clear the selected cells.
Can I undo a VBA row deletion with Ctrl+Z?
No. Excel’s Undo command does not reliably reverse changes made by a VBA macro. Save a backup before running it and check the confirmation prompt carefully.
Will an Excel VBA macro work after I upload the workbook to Zoho Sheet?
Do not expect it to run as VBA in Zoho Sheet. Uploading a workbook does not add Excel’s VBA runtime to the browser application. Keep the original macro-enabled file and verify any converted or downloaded copy before relying on it.
