To hide page-break dotted lines in Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, open File > Options > Advanced, find Display options for this worksheet, and clear Show page breaks. The lines disappear from the worksheet view; this does not remove page breaks or change how the sheet prints.
Turn off page-break lines in Excel for Windows
Use the setting for the worksheet where the dotted lines appear. Excel’s Windows setting is in the Advanced options, and the worksheet selector in that section matters: it determines which sheet the checkbox affects.
- Click the worksheet tab that has the dotted lines.
- Select File > Options.
- In Excel Options, select Advanced.
- Scroll to Display options for this worksheet.
- If needed, choose the affected worksheet from the dropdown list.
- Clear Show page breaks, then select OK.
Return to the worksheet and check that it is in Normal view. In most cases, the dotted or dashed boundaries disappear as soon as the setting is applied. If they remain, first confirm that you changed the setting for the correct sheet and that you are not looking at Page Break Preview.
The control is a display preference, not a command to delete breaks. It is useful when you want to keep working in a familiar grid without page boundaries crossing the cells. If you later need the guides again, return to the same setting and select Show page breaks.
Find the setting on a Mac
Excel for Mac places this preference in its application settings rather than Windows’ File > Options dialog. In current Microsoft 365 versions, select Excel > Settings (called Excel > Preferences in some earlier releases), open View, and clear the Page breaks or Show page breaks checkbox if it is available. The wording can vary by release. Switch to Normal view as well if the sheet is currently in a page-preview view.
These instructions apply to the desktop app. Excel for the web does not offer the same full set of desktop Options controls, and its menus and view behavior can differ. If you do not see the page-break display preference in the web app, open the workbook in desktop Excel and change it there. The workbook’s print layout and page setup are separate from whether the desktop app draws guides in the grid.
What the dotted lines mean
Excel divides a worksheet into printed pages, based on factors such as paper size, margins, orientation, scaling, and the selected printer settings. In Normal view, it can show the resulting page boundaries as dotted or dashed lines. These lines help you estimate where a printed page ends; they are not cell borders, worksheet content, or marks that will appear on the paper.
Excel can create automatic page breaks when it calculates how much content fits on each page. You can also insert manual breaks to control where a page starts or ends. In Normal view, automatic and manual boundaries may be shown with different line styles, but their appearance can vary with the view and Excel version. Turning off Show page breaks hides the guides; it does not convert a manual break into an automatic one or erase either kind.
This distinction explains a common surprise: a dotted line can appear after printing or opening Print Preview even though nobody added a border to the sheet. Excel is showing the print pagination for convenience. If the boundary is only distracting while you edit, hiding the display is usually the least disruptive response.
The setting applies to a worksheet
Display options for this worksheet means the setting is associated with an individual sheet, not necessarily every sheet in the workbook. If one tab looks clear but another still shows dotted boundaries, select the second tab and review its own setting. In the Windows dialog, use the worksheet dropdown under Display options for this worksheet to verify which sheet you are changing.
For a workbook with several affected sheets, you may need to repeat the change for each one. Do not assume that selecting one tab and hiding its guides changes every sheet. Also avoid grouping sheets just to change this display option unless you understand the effects of grouped-sheet editing: changes made while multiple sheets are selected can affect more than one sheet, and it is easy to make unintended edits.
Save the workbook after changing preferences if you want the workbook to retain its current state when reopened. If the lines return on a particular sheet, check the setting for that sheet rather than assuming Excel has restored a global preference.
Hiding guides does not change printing
Clearing Show page breaks changes what Excel draws on the screen. It does not remove page breaks, alter the print area, change margins, or scale the worksheet to fit. A sheet that previously printed across four pages will still be laid out according to its print settings after the guides are hidden.
To check the actual output, use File > Print and review the preview. If the page count or placement is wrong, address the print setup instead of the display checkbox. Depending on what you need, review:
- Orientation and paper size on the Page Layout tab.
- Margins, including whether the content needs more room.
- Scale to Fit settings, such as fitting the width to one page.
- The print area, which limits the cells Excel includes in printing.
- Manual breaks, if you need to control where one printed page ends and another begins.
Be cautious with Fit Sheet on One Page: it can make a large worksheet print at a very small, difficult-to-read size. Fitting one page wide while allowing multiple pages tall is often more readable, but the right choice depends on the data and paper size. Always inspect Print Preview or a printout before distributing the result.
Change page breaks when the layout is the problem
If your goal is to change the printed pages rather than simply declutter the screen, use Excel’s page-break tools. Select View > Page Break Preview to see page boundaries more prominently. You can drag a break in that view to adjust pagination, although scaling and other page setup choices can affect where Excel allows the break to sit.
For a manual break, select the row below where a horizontal break should begin, or the column to the right of where a vertical break should begin, then use Page Layout > Breaks > Insert Page Break. To remove a manual break, select the relevant row or column and choose Page Layout > Breaks > Remove Page Break. Choose Reset All Page Breaks to remove manual breaks from the sheet and let Excel calculate the layout again. These commands affect pagination, unlike Show page breaks, which only hides its guides.
Excel’s automatic breaks respond to changes such as resizing columns, changing margins, or selecting a different paper size. A break that shifts after one of those changes is not necessarily an error: Excel is recalculating what fits. If the print layout matters, set the paper size and orientation first, then adjust breaks and scaling, and finally review the preview.
If the dotted lines do not disappear
Try these checks before changing print settings or rebuilding the worksheet:
- Confirm the view. On the View tab, choose Normal. Page Break Preview is designed to emphasize page boundaries, so the lines may look different there.
- Check the active sheet. Return to File > Options > Advanced and verify the worksheet named under Display options for this worksheet.
- Check the checkbox again. Make sure Show page breaks is cleared, then select OK to apply the setting.
- Distinguish a page break from a border. A line that remains around particular cells may be a cell border. Select the cells and inspect Home > Borders, or temporarily use View > Gridlines to help identify ordinary gridlines.
- Reopen the workbook if necessary. Save, close, and reopen the file if the display seems stuck, then recheck the sheet-specific setting.
Gridlines and page-break guides are different. Gridlines form the regular cell grid; page-break lines mark print pagination. Hiding gridlines through the View tab will not reliably solve a page-break display issue, and it can make the worksheet harder to read. Likewise, a border applied to a cell is formatting and will not be removed by changing the page-break option.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove dotted page-break lines in Excel?
In Windows desktop Excel, select File > Options > Advanced, choose the affected sheet under Display options for this worksheet, and clear Show page breaks. Use Normal view if you are in Page Break Preview.
Will hiding page breaks change what prints?
No. It hides the page-boundary guides on screen but does not delete breaks or change the print area, scaling, margins, or page layout. Use File > Print to review the printed result.
Why did dotted lines appear after I printed?
Excel may show page boundaries in Normal view after print-related actions so you can see how the worksheet is divided into pages. The lines are visual guides, not marks added to the cells or printed output.
Why are page-break lines still showing on another worksheet?
The display option is tied to the worksheet. Select the other sheet and check its setting separately in Advanced options. Also make sure the sheet is in Normal view.
Can I remove a page break instead of hiding its line?
Yes. Use Page Layout > Breaks to remove a selected manual break or choose Reset All Page Breaks to clear manual breaks on the sheet. Excel will still calculate automatic breaks, and the remaining guides can be hidden separately.
