What is Timeline in Excel
This post is for Insert Timeline In fact, the Insert timeline in Excel represents the time from start to finish on a bar. So for this we should have some time frame like date, month, minute, hour etc. To Insert timeline in Excel, you need to first create a table then create a pivot table then from the Insert menu ribbon, choose Timeline from Filter section. Then right click on the timeline, and from Report Connections, select the fields we want to connect to the timeline. Now drag the bar from right to left as you need to filter the data over time.

As you can see that we have some data in excel in which date, location, category and revenue are given, we will insert table in it.
To insert a table, we will select the whole table, then go to the Insert tab and insert the table.
After the table is created, the pivot table will be created. Under Tables section click on Pivot Table option.
To insert pivot table, we will get something like this in a pop up window in which we have to select table and range.
Now you can see the pivot table in the image below. Select location for row, select category for columns and select revenue for value.
This will open an Insert Timeline dialog box. Click on the Date checkbox inside the dialog box and click on OK.
It will show you the timeline, and by default, it is showing month-wise data year-wise.
From here you can select the data for whatever period of time you want, such as year quarter, month and day.
If you want to see the revenue data for the month, then you have to select the month, then you can scroll to see the data. And we can see in the table that we will get the data of whatever time period we select.
Choose another date component like Quarters. It will show the quarter wise data like below:
If you want to delete the data timeline, click on the icon in the top right corner, as shown in the image below. For this you can also use the shortcut key ALT + C.
You can also customize the Excel timeline to your liking.
Finally, you can rename the Timeline window by clicking on Timeline Caption under the Timeline section.
Lastly, you can increase or decrease the size of the Timeline tab from here
You can remove the time line filter and we can see that it will give you the data of the whole excel table.
